Researching and Nurturing
the Spirit of Shogunal Culture

柳営文化研究会 — Ryuei Culture Association

Ryuei — the Shogun's court.
The spiritual apex of warrior culture.
Noh, Tea, Zen, Etiquette, Martial Arts—
united as one living cultural system.

Japanese culture has spread across the world — matcha, craft, anime, cuisine — reaching hundreds of millions. The wider the base, the higher the peak. Our mission is to ask: what stands at that summit? To understand it deeply, and to pass it on.

What is Ryuei

武家文化と「柳営」

The Culture of the Shogun's Court

The culture of the imperial court gradually spread beyond its origins, and it was the warrior class — the buke — who absorbed it most deeply, systematizing it into a living tradition. Warrior culture came to embrace spirit, body, governance, and daily life as a unified whole, becoming the foundation of Japanese society at large.

Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, during the extraordinary 265-year era of peace known as Edo, warrior culture was further refined. Interweaving with merchant and townspeople's culture, it produced a degree of cultural sophistication rare in world history.

At the heart of this warrior culture stood Ryuei — the culture of the Shogun's court. Ryuei was the living arena where Shogun, feudal lords, and retainers practiced culture daily: Noh as ceremonial art, the Shogun's tea ceremony, Zen, swordsmanship, archery, formal etiquette, calligraphy, and classical Chinese studies — all bound together as a single unified system of spiritual culture.

The word Ryuei carries within it a worldview that transcends political authority — an integrated vision of culture, spirit, etiquette, and martial discipline.

Taihei — Enduring Peace

The 265 years of Edo were a phenomenon rare in world history — a peaceful age of warriors. The samurai were the most numerous, yet fought the least. Swords were polished yet never drawn. Armour grew ever more refined — not to wound, but to discipline the spirit. Removed from the battlefield, these martial forms became art. The tool of protection transformed into an embodiment of inner cultivation. To research this era of Taihei — extraordinary cultural maturity — from a contemporary vantage is the very core of our inquiry.
